Museums in Verona

Verona has a rich heritage and many interesting museums, one of the oldest museums in Verona is the Maffeiano museum which was built in 1745, Verona's other museums include Frescoes Museum, Castelvecchio Museum, Scavi Scaligeri Museum and the Archaeological Museum.

Frescoes Museum.

Juliet's Tomb is a must visit for all Shakespear lovers, located outside the Verona walls is Frescoes Museum in the complex San Francesco al Corso which is considered to be the place where the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet took place, we may not be sure if Romeo and Juliet really existed, though inside the museum you can find the crypt where Juliet is supposed to be buried.

In 1975 the annexed "G.V. Cavalcaselle" Fresco Museum was inaugurated, the museum also includes Veronese style frescos that date back to the medieval times and the underground level contains a collection of Roman amphorae from the first century BC, these were found from the excavations of the Adige River, there are many other artifacts on display in the museum that are worth seeing.

Natural History Museum.

Being an ancient city, Verona has tried to remain connected with past through its many museums such as Frescoes Museum, Natural History Museum and also the Nicolis Historical cars museum. The Natural History Museum at Verona was founded in 1853 and house's various naturalist collections of Veronese plants, fossils, minerals and animals that have been collected by various citizens since the year 1500.

The findings kept in this museum are from the various Paleolithic and Neolithic sites, wide sections of the museum are dedicated to zoological, botanical and geological collections. The most important room at this museum is dedicated to the fossils of Bolca that is the most beautiful, famous and best preserved in the world, Bolca has also been included in the UNESCO world Heritage Sites of natural science, the museum is located at the Pompei palace.

Castelvecchio Museum.

The most prominent museum of Verona is Castelvecchio Museum that is transformed from the Scala family castle, the museum reflects Romanesque and Gothic architecture, adorned with paintings of prominent Veronese artists, armour's, inscriptions and bells as well the work of Master of Saint Anastasia.

Scarpa's unique architectural style is visible in the details of the staircases, furnishings, fixtures and doorways, and displays a collection of sculptures from the Roman period, some of the sculptures exhibited are the "Crucifix" and "St. Cecilia and Catherina" by Saint Anastasia. Also included is the Equestrian statue of Cangrade I della Scala, the Holy family by Andrea Mantegna, Madonna with Child by Bellini and many more famous paintings and frescos from the 14th century.

Archaeological Museum.

Verona, being under Roman rule, exhibits its findings from that period in the Archaeological Museum and Roman Theatre, the museum was built in 1924 on the site of the former 15th Century monastery of St. Jerome, that was originally founded by Antonio Avena.

Today the museum is the main place to view Roman findings from Verona, attracting many visitors who like to admire it's statues, inscriptions and the many beautiful Roman mosaics that mostly represent gladiators with armour and weapons, there's also an impressive bronze statue that was found in the river Adige, many of the museum's finds come from Verona's well known central streets and squares.

Scavi Scaligeri Museum.

The Scavi Scaligeri Museum is a result of excavations that have been carried out in one of Verona's City Centre squares, the first archaeological evidence that was found were mosaics floors from the first century A.D, followed by a tomb and the foundation of medieval towers.

As a result of the findings they then decided to build a museum underground so that the remains can be kept intact and showcased in their original state, the museum also hosts a regular Photograph exhibition that is very popular with tourists, the Scavi Scaligeri Museum is one of Verona's most visited attractions.

Maffeiano Lapidary Museum.

One of the oldest public museums in Verona is the Maffeiano museum, it was built in 1745 for Scipione Maffeine who was a famous Veronese man and contributed his rich collection to the museum. To experience ancient Roman culture and society just walk through it's building and courtyard lined with chronological inscriptions.

The side building of the Philharmonic Academy to which it still remains linked has a Roman tomb stone that reflects the cultural aspect of the Roman period. In 1982 the display was completely re-arranged according to modern and scientific methods, the museum and the courtyards is a great place to reflect about the true spirit of Greek and Roman architecture.
