Sightseeing in Verona

Verona's history, culture and beauty makes it one of the best Italian cities for sightseeing with Torre dei lamberti, Juliet's House, Rocca Scaligera castle, Arena di Verona and the popular Lake Garda are among some of tourist hot spots.

Besides the ancient churches and monuments, there are wine bars and restaurants that will surely tickle your palette with mouth-watering Italian delicacies and the finest Italian wines. You can get economical meals at restaurants hidden behind those beautiful back streets, while in the main streets are plenty of shops and boutiques that sell quality Italian goods.

The hills that rise right behind the city have olive trees growing in abundance there, this gives Verona a Mediterranean feel, these hills shelter the Valpolicella wine region and the famous wine region of Veneto, Amarone wine.

Verona is known by many as the Florence of the North and is bejeweled with elegant narrow towers, the Torre di Lamberti is Verona's highest tower that stands at 83 meters. The tower was built by the Lamberti family in the 12th century and took some time before it was finished, as it took several centuries to finish and accounting for the change in the constructions style.

The main reason why most people visit this place as an excursion spot is to ascend the many steps to get to the top, you have to scale a whopping 368 steps to get to the top, once there you get a fantastic birds eye view of Verona, so make sure you take a camera as you wont want to miss out on some great photos.

If you want to venture outside Verona then a visit to Soave is a must, Soave is about 10 miles east of Verona and is mostly associated with white wine, though Soave's main attraction is the magnificent 14th century Rocca Scaligera castle that was built by the Scaligeri family to protect it's city from invading armies.

The castle is situated at the top of a hill that can be reached by foot or car, if your driving there is a car park just outside the castle, once you reach the castle you get a wonderful view of the town below and the vineyards beyond it. The castle itself has lots of extravagant furnishing, with many weapons and armour on display from that period, children will love the castle's many staircases that runs along the fortress, all in all i'm sure you will agree that a visit to Soave is a great day out that the whole family will enjoy.
